Neurology and UMC/AHSC Stroke Team
Receive National Award

The UA Department of Neurology and the UMC/AHSC Stroke Team recently received national recognition from the American Stroke Association (ASA), a division of the American Heart Association, for being one of the first hospitals in Arizona to implement the ASA Patient Management Tool.

The Patient Management Tool enables hospitals to track the important components of acute stroke treatment and to implement evidence-based guidelines for the management of acute stroke. For example, it is possible to use the tool to track key timelines for administration of thrombolytic treatment against benchmarks from similar hospitals.

UMC/AHSC is one of several hospitals nationwide to be invited to beta test this recently developed tool. "The use of this tool can improve patient care, resident education and clinical research in stroke," states Bruce Coull, MD, chief of Neurology.

At the award ceremony are Dr. Kenneth LeBresh,
American Stroke Association; Leslie Ritter, PhD, RN,
UA assistant professor of nursing; Denise Bruck, AAS, UA senior research specialist; Bruce Coull, MD, UA chief of Neurology;
Diane Rensvold, RN, UA research nurse; Patricia Tyler, RN,
American Stroke Association; and Dr. Timothy Ingall,
American Stroke Association.
