Arizona College of Public Health Receives National Accreditation

The Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health has received a full three-year accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), as well as recognition as one of 33 accredited graduate schools of public health nationwide.

The Arizona College of Public Health, a tri-university collaboration among the UA, ASU and NAU, is only the second collaborative college in the nation to receive CEPH accreditation.

"Accreditation is a significant achievement for our college," explains G. Marie Swanson, PhD, MPH, dean of the Arizona College of Public Health. "For our students, it means they can be assured they are receiving the highest quality of education possible and, for our communities, it means that we are providing them with our best public health efforts."

"The accreditation represents national recognition of the quality of the commitment by the faculty, the University of Arizona, the State of Arizona and our strong community supporters, especially Mel and Enid Zuckerman. Support and encouragement from the Zuckermans resulted in a distinctive characteristic of the College, that is, its strength in programs that promote healthy lifestyles and prevent disease, notes AHSC Vice President Raymond Woosley, MD, PhD.

The accreditation process took almost two years to complete and required a comprehensive self-evaluation by College staff, faculty, students and alumni and a site visit by a CEPH panel. CEPH accreditation is based on an evaluation of the program's mission, organizational setting, resources, instructional programs, research, service, faculty, students and future plans.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled in early November for the Roy P. Drachman Hall, a new building that will house the Arizona College of Public Health (which currently is spread among 19 sites on the UA campus) and state-of-the-art instructional facilities for the UA Colleges of Nursing and Pharmacy. Move-in date is anticipated sometime in fall 2005.
