Advanced Access Helps
Streamline Patient Scheduling

The University Physicians Family Practice Office at 707 N. Alvernon has implemented a new appointment program called Advanced Access. The program, which started in July, enables patients to more easily schedule an appointment with a member of their care team.

With the new internal organization structure, a member of the Family Practice team can see a patient that day, within two days or two weeks. Every effort will be made to accommodate the patient's needs. They no longer have to schedule appointments months in advance unless they want to, says Tammie Bassford, MD, Family & Community Medicine department head.

The patient care team consists of two or three faculty physicians, and six to eight resident physicians. In addition, two nurse practitioners are available. The team provides the patients with the attention of a small group practice plus the knowledge and enthusiasm of an academic team.

Members of the team meet regularly to update each other on the care needs of the patients. This is particularly important to the patients who have health conditions that require frequent care, adds
Dr. Bassford.
