J. Lyle Bootman, PhD, ScD, dean of the UA College of Pharmacy, has been awarded the 2007 American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Hugo H. Schaefer Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to APhA, the pharmacy profession and society. G. Marie Swanson, PhD, MPH, founding dean and professor at The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, has been named the first Mel and Enid Zuckerman Endowed Chair in Public Health, one of only three endowed chairs for dean positions at the UA. David Alberts, MD, director of the Arizona Cancer Center, recently was awarded the 2006 Salsbury Award, the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association's highest honor, for his outstanding contribution to health care in Arizona. He is acknowledged for his pioneering work in cancer research and "his tireless efforts to prevent illness and cure cancer." Agnes Attakai, director of health disparities outreach and prevention education at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health, has been appointed to the Minority Women's Health Panel of Experts of the Office on Women's Health (OWH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The panel ensures that the ethnic minority focus is incorporated throughout OWH's programs, policies and initiatives. Jack Dean, PhD, ScD, research associate in pharmacology and toxicology at the UA College of Pharmacy, has been named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor at a ceremony in Paris. The Chevalier, or Knight, is one of the five classes of the Legion of Honor, which was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. The award recognizes Dr. Dean for his contribution to medical research and "commitment to the expansion of French pharmaceutical research in the United States." Steven Goldschmid, MD, professor of medicine, has been named chairman of the UA Department of Medicine. Dr. Goldschmid has been a UA faculty member and chief of the Section of Gastroenterology for the past six years. Robert Livingston, MD, professor of medicine and chair of the Breast Cancer Committee of the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), a national clinical research group, has joined the faculty of the Arizona Cancer Center. A world-renowned cancer researcher, Dr. Livingston initiated and ran clinical trials at the University of Washington, Seattle, for more than 25 years before his recent move to Tucson. Timothy G. Lohman, PhD, professor of physiology and public health and adjunct professor of nutritional sciences, and Scott Going, PhD, professor of nutritional sciences and physiology, have joined the Arizona Arthritis Center (AAC). Drs. Lohman and Going both have collaborated on studies with the AAC related to exercise and osteoporosis, as well as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis research. Ronald Wisneski, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in adult degenerative, neoplastic, traumatic, metabolic and inflammatory spinal disorders, has joined the UA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and UPH. He will practice at the UPH Clinics at Alvernon. Stephanie Gauby, Navajo, UA College of Medicine Class of 2009, recently was profiled in an article in Keepsake 2006, A Guide for Minority Science Students, a national resource guide for minority undergraduates interested in a career in the health professions, published by Spectrum Unlimited, Inc.
