The diabetes epidemic, intertwined with growing obesity and related cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases, is sweeping Arizona and the nation. What can individuals do to reduce their risks? Craig Stump, MD, PhD, interim director for the UA Diabetes Research Program and associate professor of medicine, and Betsy Dokken, PhD, NP, offer suggestions.
Recently published research offers hope for teen smokers who want to quit. A study of the effects of medication and counseling together on adolescents who had tried unsuccessfully to quit smoking cigarettes suggests that the treatment may help teens kick the habit over the short term.
