Former Beatle Paul McCartney made a $1-million donation to the Arizona Cancer Center in memory of his wife, Linda, to help develop new ways of treating and preventing cancer without using animal research.
At the same time, McCartney made another donation to The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Both cancer centers treated Linda McCartney during her fight against breast cancer.
The donation will enable the Arizona Cancer Center to explore the advantages of new research that follows the McCartneys' interest in combating illness, including botanical medicine and holistic therapy.
"I have given this money in behalf of our family in memory of our lovely Linda and so that others may be given the chance to live without animals dying," said Paul McCartney in a statement released to the public. "Linda's doctors were all great and managed to alleviate suffering which she might otherwise have had. I want to help them continue that work for the benefit of others and to enable them to study the possibilities of alternative treatments. This money is given with the understanding that none of the money is used in animal testing."
In recognition of Linda McCartney's life, the Arizona Cancer Center established the Linda McCartney Endowed Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
