Associate Dean of Academic Affairs

Joyceen S. Boyle
Joyceen S. Boyle, PhD, RN, FAAN, has joined the UA College of Nursing as professor and associate dean for Academic Affairs. Her first day at the UA was Aug. 11.

Dr. Boyle has extensive expertise and experience in baccalaureate, master's and doctoral education and is recognized nationally and internationally as a transcultural nursing expert, scholar and researcher.

Her research primarily has focussed on cultural responses to illnesses within vulnerable populations. Her most recent work concerns African American mothers who provide care to adult children with HIV.

"We are delighted to welcome this esteemed educator, administrator, scholar and scientist to the College of Nursing," says Marjorie A. Isenberg, DNSc, RN, FAAN, dean of the College of Nursing.

As associate dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Boyle will be responsible for maintaining the excellence of the College of Nursing's undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including its new accelerated nursing program and an online doctoral degree program, one of the first in the nation.

"I have been impressed with the very significant steps the College is taking to help solve the serious nursing shortage facing Arizona and indeed the whole country. The innovative programs and the support for nursing faculty are remarkable here. I'm excited to be working at an institution on the forward edge of nursing," Dr. Boyle says.

Dr. Boyle earned a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah; a master's degree in public health nursing from the University of California at Berkeley; and a PhD from the University of Utah. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN).

She held numerous academic positions at the University of Utah and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where she mostly recently served as associate dean for Faculty Practice and Community Programs. She has published extensively in journals and is the co-author of a textbook, Transcultural Concepts in Nursing Care, now in its fourth edition.
