
| James M. Galloway, MD, director of the Native
American Cardiology Program and assistant professor of clinical medicine
at the UA College of Medicine, accepted an award on behalf of
the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in recognition of his and
the group's efforts to raise awareness about the relationship
between diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The American
Diabetes Association presented Dr. Galloway with the 2003 C. Everett
Koop Award for Health Promotion and Awareness
at the ADA's annual meeting, held recently in New Orleans. Dr. Galloway has been a leader in
the successful "Make the Link: Diabetes,
Heart Disease and Stroke" public service
campaign. The campaign is a collaborative effort
between the ADA and the ACC aimed at increasing awarenessamong physicians and
patientsof the link between diabetes and heart disease.
Ronald S. Weinstein, MD, founding director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program (ATP), recently was elected president of the American Telemedicine Association at its annual meeting in Orlando, Fla. The American Telemedicine Association is the largest and most prestigious professional society in the telemedicine field. Since founding the ATP in 1996, it has evolved from an eight-site demonstration project, funded by the Arizona State Legislature, into one of the largest and most successful telemedicine programs in the world. Program participants include many health care facilities on the Navajo, Hopi and Apache Indian Reservations, the rural Arizona State Prisons, schools in Phoenix, hospitals in border communities (including Nogales, Douglas and Yuma), and health care facilities in many other rural and urban communities throughout the state. Zhao Chen, PhD, assistant professor of public health, whose abstract "Increased Fracture Risk among Breast Cancer SurvivorsResults from the Women's Health Initiative," was selected by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) Newsworthy Abstract Review Committee as potentially being of great interest to the media. This year, more than 1,800 abstracts were submitted to the ASBMR 25th Annual Meeting & Anniversary Celebration. Dr. Chen has been invited to present the abstract at a media briefing during the annual meeting on Sept. 19 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. She will explain her research in lay language and answer questions from media in attendance. William A. Grana, MD, MPH, professor and head of Orthopaedic Surgery, was elected vice president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and will be a part of that organization's Board of Directors. The AOSSM is an organization of approximately 1,500 orthopaedic surgeons with subspecialty interest in orthopaedic sports medicine. This organization provides leadership and educational opportunities for orthopaedic surgeons and other health professionals in the area of sports medicine.
Obstetricians, gynecologists and pediatricians from UMC and The University Physicians were on hand to answer general questions about pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care at no charge at UMC's "Ask a Doc" booth at the 13th Annual Baby Fair at the Tucson Convention Center, Aug. 16. Dennis D. Patton, MD, UMC Division of Nuclear Medicine, attended the annual meeting of Nobel laureates in Lindau, Germany, as an invited observer, representing the UA and the Alexander von Humboldt Association of America. This was the year for the laureates in Medicine or Physiology. For four days, 12 Nobelists lectured about their work and held discussion groups with 500 students from all over the world. |
