Second Class in College of Nursing
Accelerated BSN Partnership Program Graduates

The second class of students admitted to the UA College of Nursing Accelerated BSN Partnership Program graduated in August. The Accelerated Program is a response to a legislative recommendation that the College of Nursing double its enrollment to help meet the shortage of nurses in Arizona. A 14-month, fast-paced collaborative program, it prepares individuals with earned college degrees in non-nursing fields for a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Sponsoring hospitals, including UMC, Carondelet Health Care and TMC, fund tuition for students in the program in exchange for a two-year employment commitment following graduation.

PHOENIX NEWS & NOTES

Regents Approve Plan for Medical College Expansion to Downtown Phoenix

On Aug. 16, the Arizona Board of Regents approved a 20-year plan as to content and concept to expand The University of Arizona College of Medicine to Downtown Phoenix. The plan must be submitted to the Joint Legislative Budget Committee by Sept. 1.

Last session, the Arizona Legislature allocated (and the Governor approved) $7 million ($1 million to Arizona State University and $6 million to the UA) to bring a full four-year program of the College of Medicine to Phoenix. As part of the legislation approving the allocation, the Arizona Board of Regents was required to submit a detailed plan to the Legislature. The document details the planned facilities, budget, communications strategy, enrollment, programming and staffing for the new campus.

The new campus will be located at the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, also home to the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), located at Fifth Street and Van Buren in Phoenix. The historical Phoenix Union High School buildings have been provided by the City of Phoenix to house the new campus. Extensive renovations are under way to prepare for the July 2006 opening. The expansion of the campus will provide opportunities for Arizona medical students to attend all four years of medical school in Phoenix. The first full four-year class will start in July 2007.
