(EDITORS NOTE: November is American Diabetes Month.)

Q: Does diabetes cause eye problems, and, if so, what can I do to prevent them?

A: Diabetes is a serious disease that can lead to vision loss or even blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among Americans ages 25-74.

Most people with diabetic retinopathy don't experience any symptoms in the early, most treatable stages, so getting an annual eye exam is an extremely important preventive measure. Blindness usually can be prevented by laser therapy if this problem is identified early.

To avoid diabetic eye problems, keep your blood sugar under control, bring high blood pressure down, and get a dilated eye exam by an eye doctor every year. See your eye doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms: blurred or double vision, seeing spots or floaters, feeling pain or pressure in one or both eyes, decreased side vision, or trouble reading.
