ANSWERS TO HEALTH QUESTIONS

FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA
HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER IN TUCSON

OCTOBER 1997

Q: How can I find out if I have osteoporosis?

A: The DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) scanner measures the density of the spine and hip bones in a matter of minutes, then transmits the reading to a computer to provide an image and analysis of the scanned areas. Patients lie on the bed of the scanner, which also can measure total body composition and help diagnose other illnesses such as arthritis.

* Although the DEXA scanner is commonly used in hospitals and clinics, the Arizona Arthritis Center has equipped a new motor home with a DEXA scanner that will visit rural communities, reservations, nursing homes and worksites throughout the state to screen Arizonans for evidence of osteoporosis. The mobile unit is the first of its kind in the state and one of about two dozen mobile scanners nationwide. It will make screenings available to patients who otherwise may not have access.
