The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center: Employing more than 5,000 people on the UA's north campus, AHSC includes The University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy, the School of Health Professions, University Medical Center, and The University Physicians. The University of Arizona College of Medicine began 30 years ago with the dream of creating a resource for all of our state's citizens. The monumental task of establishing a medical school from the ground up happened thanks to tremendous community support.

The seeds of devotion and excellence planted in 1967, today have grown into a full-service academic medical center, setting new standards in health care education, research, patient care and service for the people of Arizona.

The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center (AHSC) now includes the highly ranked Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy and the School of Health Professions.

Within AHSC, there are now eight Centers of Excellence designated by the Arizona Board of Regents. Each center is dedicated to actively preventing disease and improving lives across Arizona's diverse population.

AHSC now touches communities statewide. Our faculty members tirelessly offer their expertise and service to establish clinics and health care programs. Health care students taking part in rural rotations fan out across Arizona, living and learning in areas ranging from our border with Mexico, to Native American communities throughout the state.

AHSC also brings millions of dollars into the state's economy in research grants and gifts and employs more than 5,000 people. Just as community support was at the heart of our found-ing, it remains a critical element in our progress today. It is only due to the support of legislators, private industry and generous individual donors that AHSC is able to thrive and grow.

Understanding the role that an academic medical center plays for all Arizonans is a challenge, given the diversity of our people and programs. To help with that understanding, we have compiled this magazine as a way of introducing some of our efforts across the state.

We think you will find that translating research into real benefits, and offering excellence in health care education and service is a goal Arizona Health Sciences Center faculty, students and staff pursue with pride.

James E. Dalen, M.D., M.P.H.
Vice President for Health Sciences and Dean, UA College of Medicine
