University Medical Center is ranked among the nation's premier hospitals in U.S.News & World Report's 18th annual guide to "America's Best Hospitals."

The hospital rankings were announced nationally today by U.S. News. The complete rankings appear at health.usnews.com/besthospitals. The hard copy of the magazine will be available at newsstands on Monday, July 16.

This year UMC is ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the United States in the following medical specialties:

The standards for ranking in "Best Hospitals" are rigorous, according to U.S. News. Of the 5,462 medical centers they evaluated in the United States (military and veterans hospitals are not included), only 173 were ranked in even one of the 16 medical specialties measured by the magazine. The methodology examines reputation, mortality, and a mix of care-related factors such as nursing and patient services.

"University Medical Center receives this recognition because of the people who strive to make a difference -- the physicians, scientists, the nurses, the staff; everyone believes in doing their utmost to better the lives of people living in the Southwest," said Greg Pivirotto, UMC President and CEO.

UMC opened in 1971 and is the primary teaching hospital of The University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. UMC also is affiliated with Centers of Excellence at the Arizona Health Sciences Center including the Arizona Cancer Center, the UA Sarver Heart Center and the Arizona Respiratory Center, among others. UMC's website is www.umcaz.org.
