Several UA alumni are among the 101 students who recently graduated from The University of Arizona College of Medicine.

The graduation ceremony and convocation were held in May on the UA campus. During the convocation, the students received their hoods and recited the Hippocratic Oath.

Graduates who are UA alumni include:

Jeffrey Joseph Alvarez of Glendale. Alvarez is the son of Fernando and Norma Alvarez. Alvarez, who received his undergraduate degree in 1994, plans to pursue his residency in family practice at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix.

Kirk Alan Bronander of Prescott. Bronander is the son of Roy and Jackie Bronander. Bronander plans to pursue his residency in medicine at the University of Nevada School of Medicine-Reno.

Jon Russel Brower of Phoenix. Brower is the son of George and Barbara Brower. Brower, who received his undergraduate degree in 1994, plans to pursue his residency in medicine/neurology at UA-affiliated hospitals in Tucson.

Michelle Joy Canham of Tucson. Canham is the daughter of Laurel Canham of Phoenix. Canham, who received her undergraduate degree in 1993, plans to pursue her residency in medicine at McGaw Medical Center Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill.

Teresa Leola Jackson of Tucson. Jackson is the daughter of Col. Charles and Rena Jackson of Tucson. Jackson, who received her undergraduate degree in 1994, plans to pursue her residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of California-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

Michael David Reyes Macabuhay of Glendale. Macabuhay is the son of Ronolfo and Marylu Macabuhay of Glendale. Macabuhay, who received his undergraduate degree in 1994, plans to pursue his residency in preliminary medicine, followed by a residency in anesthesiology at UA-affiliated hospitals in Tucson.

Kristie Kay Ostash of Scottsdale. Ostash is the daughter of Ron and Margie Ostash of Scottsdale. Ostash, who received her undergraduate degree in 1992, plans to pursue her residency in pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles in Los Angeles, Calif.

Kimberly Denise Smith of Tucson. Smith is the daughter of Dennis Smith. Smith, who received her undergraduate degree in 1994, plans to pursue her residency in pediatrics at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.

David Stephen Snodgrass of Tucson. Snodgrass is the son of Dave and Alice Snodgrass of Tempe. Snodgrass, who received his undergraduate degree in 1993, plans to pursue his residency in family practice at St. Anthony Health Services in Denver, Colo.

Anthony Matthew Stazzone of Glendale. Stazzone is the son of Frances Stazzone of Glendale. Stazzone, who received his undergraduate degree in 1993, plans to pursue his residency in medicine at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

For four years, the 101 medical students -- 54 women, 47 men -- worked toward graduation day, which is followed by the next step in building a medical career: residencies. Residency programs vary in length according to specialty, lasting from three years for general medicine/family practice specialties to eight years for the most specialized of surgeons. Forty-five percent of the graduating Class of 1998 will remain in Arizona for their residencies, and 58 students will go into primary care.
