Dr. Anthony has held appointments in three different federal agencies. At the Agency for Healthcare Policy and Research, she managed expert panels that were developing evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. She worked on the guidelines "Evaluation and Management of Early HIV Infection" and "Quality Determinants of Mammography." At the Food and Drug Administration, she was the Acting Deputy Director of the Office of Women's Health and also served as science advisor and director of the women's health research program. At the National Institutes of Health, she became the Director of Research Programs in the Office of Research on Women's Health. She has served on numerous national committees and advisory boards on various women's health issues.
After leaving the federal government in April 2000, Dr Anthony joined the Department of Pharmacology at Georgetown University Medical Center. While at Georgetown, Dr. Anthony was a co-investigator on a number of research grants and projects. She will continue her research at AHSC.
"We're extremely pleased Marietta Anthony has agreed to join the Arizona Health Sciences Center to further strengthen our already outstanding research efforts in women's health," said Raymond Woosley, MD, PhD, UA Vice President for Health Sciences. "Her expertise in this area and her ability to bring researchers together in collaborative efforts in women's health research are her greatest assets. We know her talents will help AHSC address the health needs of women in our state and beyond."
"I'm excited to be here at the Arizona Health Sciences Center," Dr. Anthony said. "My experience in women's health has been in building research programs and developing new approaches to research and policy issues. Some of my interests are how women and men differ biologically and in their response to drugs; the safe use of medications by pregnant women; and hormone replacement therapy and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS). The quality and breadth of existing programs in women's health at the University convinced me that there is a great opportunity here to make a real difference in women's health. I look forward to working with faculty, staff and students to enhance research, and with the greater Arizona community to improve the health of women."
At AHSC, Dr. Anthony's goals are to work with others to enhance and build upon existing programs in women's health through:
Dr. Anthony earned a PhD in medical microbiology and immunology at the UCLA School of Medicine, where she worked on retroviruses that cause cancer. Afterward, she was a postdoctoral fellow studying cancer growth in the Department of Biological Chemistry at UCLA.
