Dr. Kafka was born in Prague in 1948 and immigrated to Israel in 1949. He earned his medical degree at the Hebrew University Medical School and completed his internship at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem in 1973. He was mobilized into the Israel Navy the same year and served as the Navy's chief doctor between 1975 and 1977. He then completed his training in internal medicine at Haifa's Bnai Zion Medical Center, where he applied his combat experiences of mass casualty injuries to a civilian setting.
