This is the seventh year that NRC has issued awards to hospitals recognized by consumers as having the best image and reputation in their individual markets. TMC and UMC shared the award for the Tucson market in 2001 and 1999. UMC held the award alone in 2000.
UMC and TMC are among more than 150 hospitals in markets across the country to earn Consumer Choice Awards this year. NRC's Healthcare Market Guide Study surveyed nearly 140,000 households in the contiguous 48 states and the District of Columbia, making it the most comprehensive study of its kind.
Individual winners are based on consumer responses in each metropolitan area. Co-winners are named when scores fall within the statistical margin of error for a given market.
The only other Arizona hospital named for 2002 was Mayo Clinic Hospital in the Phoenix metro area.
UMC is a non-profit, 365-bed hospital affiliated with the University of Arizona. It is the primary teaching hospital for the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing
UMC also was honored this summer when U.S. News and World Report listed UMC as among the top 50 hospitals nationwide in neurology, neurosurgery, cancer care, cardiology, heart surgery and rheumatology.
