TUCSON, AZ - Salpointe High School is collaborating with the UA Steele Children’s Research Center to host their fourth “Game for the Greater Good™,” dedicated to type 1diabetes on Friday, October 30, 2009.

Friday’s pregame activities feature a special tailgate for type 1 patients and their families, hosted by the Lancer Locos.

Members of the women’s golf team will provide games and activities. The children and their families will be escorted onto the field to be honored during halftime and Salpointe has collaborated with Chipotle restaurants to host a field goal kicking contest. Six kids will have the chance to kick a field goal and win a burrito party for 25.

“Games for the Greater Good™” is a non-profit community service project designed to raise awareness for local and national causes. The campaign is taking place during the 2009 season, with each home game honoring a special cause: Davis Monthan Air Force Base and all active and retired American servicemen and women (September 11), Special Olympics (September 17), Arizona Cancer Center and breast cancer awareness (October 2), Steele Children’s Research Center and type 1 diabetes (October 30) and the Southern Arizona Community Food Bank (November 6).

If you would like to be involved in the game time ceremonies, contact Merri Siler at 520-547-4341 or msiler@salpointe.org.

The University of Arizona, University Physicians Healthcare and University Medical Center work together to care for patients, educate medical students, train resident-physicians and conduct clinical and basic research. The UA Steele Children’s Research Center and UMC are working together to build Diamond Children’s Medical Center (www.diamondchildrens.org), now under construction and scheduled to open in 2010. Diamond Children's will be Arizona’s only pediatric inpatient medical center connected to an academic research facility – the Steele Center (www.steelecenter.arizona.edu).
