Leading Medical Educator to Speak at the UA Department of Surgery Resident Research Day June 12

June 11, 2008

“Evaluation of Performance or Bowling without Pins” will be the topic of the keynote address by Dr. Gary Dunnington, an award winning leader in the field of surgical education.

In 1997, Dr. Dunnington joined the faculty in the Department of Surgery at Southern Illinois University, where he is now professor and chair of surgery and program director. He received his medical degree from Indiana University and his residency training from the General Surgery Residency Program at The University of Arizona. Dr. Dunnington previously spent nearly six years at the University of Southern California, where he was associate professor of surgery, clerkship and program director, and senior associate dean for academic affairs for the USC School of Medicine.

Dr. Dunnington has received a total of 12 teaching awards, having been named Outstanding Faculty Teacher of the Year eight times at three institutions. He received the Association for Surgical Education (ASE) Distinguished Educator Award in 1999. He has been involved in surgical education research for many years and has been the director of a fellowship program in surgical education at USC and now at SIU. He is past president of the Association for Surgical Education and a frequent visiting professor throughout the United States and Canada.

Dr. Dunnington’s area of clinical practice is surgical oncology with a focus in breast disease and he is the founder and director of the Breast Center at SIU.
