Neurosurgeon Specializing in Adult and Pediatric Problems of the Spine and Brain Joins UA Department of Surgery

September 05, 2008

Arturo Camacho, MD, PhD, has joined The University of Arizona Department of Surgery, Section of Neurosurgery, as assistant professor of clinical surgery.

Dr. Camacho specializes in adult and pediatric complex skull base surgery, cerebrovascular conditions, complex spine issues, primary and metastatic brain tumors, peripheral nerve surgery (carpel tunnel), degenerative and disc-related spine problems, including minimally invasive approaches. He serves as the neurosurgical trauma liaison, working closely with the UA’s trauma surgeons.

He previously practiced at the Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Healthcare System; prior to that, he practiced at the Order of St. Francis St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford, Ill. He is board certified with the American Board of Neurological Surgery and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.

Dr. Camacho earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and his doctorate in neurophysiology from the University of Iowa. He completed a neurosurgical residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and received epilepsy surgery training from The Cleveland Clinic and the Mayo Clinic. He also serves as assistant scientist in neural transplantation at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

UA neurosurgeons at University Medical Center work as a team to diagnose and treat diseases and injuries of the brain and spinal cord. The addition of Dr. Camacho to the Section of Neurosurgery further strengthens the department’s mission to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatment for patients with stroke, severe head and back injuries, epilepsy and other neurological conditions, said Rainer Gruessner, MD, UA Department of Surgery chairman.
