UA Pharmacy Scientist Receives Fellowship
January 20, 2009
Jason Hurwitz, PhD, assistant research scientist at The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, has been chosen to receive a postdoctoral fellowship in health outcomes from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation.
The award will provide Dr. Hurwitz, who works for the UA College of Pharmacy’s Center for Health Outcomes and PharmacoEconomic Research, an annual stipend of $40,000 for two years to study the outcomes and prevention of damage associated with overdoses of over-the-counter cough and cold/pain and fever medications. His research will focus on the number and nature of overdoses associated with these drugs, and on evaluating various methods of helping consumers better determine and measure appropriate doses of these medications.
The PhRMA Foundation Post Doctoral Program in Health Outcomes supports research that will strengthen representation of health outcomes in schools of pharmacy, medicine, nursing and public health. Health outcomes research evaluates the value of pharmaceuticals and the value of their outcomes, addressing widespread concern about rising health-care expenditures and increasing understanding of the impact of new therapies.
