The University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center Women Heart Health Education Committee is hosting a luncheon geared toward (but not only for) women: “The Heart of the Matter - What Women Need to Know About Heart Disease.”
The best way for women and their families to prevent heart disease and stroke is to learn about cardiovascular health and stay informed. A panel of experts from the UA Sarver Heart Center will give presentations on a range of topics, such as risk factors and how to recognize them, high blood pressure and what to do about it, heart scans and what to know about them and the kinds of questions every woman should ask her doctor. The event will offer plenty of opportunity for questions and answers.
Speakers include Lori Mackstaller, MD, clinical and associate professor of medicine, and Gordon Ewy, MD, director of the UA Sarver Heart Center and professor and chief of cardiology, UA College of Medicine.
Admission is $30 and includes information materials and a heart-healthy lunch. Seats are limited and registration is required. Last day to register is Tuesday, Oct. 13. For reservations, please call the Sarver Heart Center Office of Public Education at (520) 626-3766.
Background: Too many women still think breast cancer is the “No. 1 killer,” when in fact 10 times more women die of heart disease. Women experiencing heart trouble are more likely to write it off as something not related to the heart and thus not seek emergency care. Women also are more likely than men to be misdiagnosed with a non-heart related condition, partly because symptoms in women can differ vastly from those in men. Women also are more likely to have a silent (unnoticed) heart attack.
