9 Arizonans report Stand ‘n Seal incidents to poison center

Tucson -- The Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center warns Arizonans to avoid using an aerosol grout sealer that appears to have caused breathing difficulties and other toxic reactions in at least nine state residents since June.

“After using the aerosol TilePerfect® Stand ‘n Seal grout sealer, these people experienced shortness of breath, nausea, headache and other symptoms,” Leslie Boyer, MD, medical director of the poison center, says. “Even though they were following product directions, they required emergency medical treatment after using it. Four were hospitalized overnight with respiratory problems.”

The U.S.Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary national recall of about 300,000 cans of the aerosol sealer on Aug. 31.

Arizonans affected by the product were in Tucson, Kingman, Cottonwood and Queen Creek. All of the cases involved Stand ‘n Seal aerosol purchased at a Home Depot store. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 88 consumers reported adverse reactions after using the aerosol.

The cases involving breathing difficulties follow a change last spring in the product’s formulation. New shipments of Stand ‘n Seal are expected to return to the original product formulation.

“We don’t know how many defective cans of Stand ‘n Seal are still on people’s shelves,” Boyer says. “We strongly urge anyone who has purchased Stand ‘n Seal since May to think twice about using the product.”
