The Arizona Cancer Center is ranked 16th among
40 comprehensive cancer centers across the nation for receiving the largest
amount of grant awards from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 2004-05.
The NCI awarded the Center and its 230 members $37,534,303 in research
grants during the fiscal year.
Other
NCI-designated cancer centers ranking below the Arizona Cancer Center include
the University of Chicago Cancer Center; Ohio State University; Roswell Park
Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y.; the University of Alabama, Birmingham; the
University of Wisconsin-Madison; the University of California-San Diego; and
Columbia University. The M.D.
Anderson Cancer Center
at the University
of Texas, which has 1,170
faculty members, topped the list with $104 million in awards.
Including the NCI
funding, the Arizona Cancer Center received $59,273,081 in total
peer-reviewed funding and $70,269,742 in overall cancer-related project funding
during 2004-05.
Under the
direction of David S. Alberts, MD,
the Arizona
Cancer Center is known for its translational
research and for its Cancer Prevention and Control Program, which is one of the
largest in the nation. Several new agents spawned by translational
research and developed at the Arizona Cancer Center are in clinical trials at the
Center and nationally. The Center has research faculty working in Tucson and the Phoenix area.
The Arizona Cancer Center
is Arizona’s
first National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. With
primary locations at The University of Arizona in Tucson and the Virginia Piper Cancer
Center in Scottsdale, the Center has
more than a dozen research and education offices distributed throughout the
state. The Center’s mission is to prevent and cure cancer through patient
