Better Than Ever Program members are ready to tackle half-marathons, beat cancer

The Arizona Cancer Center’s Better Than Ever Program is helping 52 people living in the Phoenix area improve their lives and fight cancer. Many of the BTE members, who have trained for several months, will compete in one of two half-marathons being held on Dec. 4 and Jan. 15.  The BTE program offers free coaching, advice from physical therapists, motivation and awards. In addition to feeling good about their physical achievement, BTE members also like the feeling of being able to raise $500 to support cancer research and prevention at the Arizona Cancer Center, Greater Phoenix. The half marathons are:

The Runners Den/Fiesta Bowl Half Marathon

And

PF Chang’s Rock “n” Roll Marathon

Linda Zell, a breast cancer survivor, started participating in Better Than Ever four years ago following her cancer treatment. “It got me on the road to healthy living and exercising, and I haven’t stopped,” she says. Zell, who never exercised before joining BTE, now participates in about five or six events each year. She also coaches up to 10 Better Than Ever members in the Scottsdale area. Zell will participate in the Rock “n” Roll Marathon. She just finished participating in a Komen Foundation 60-mile three-day walk.

The Arizona Cancer Center is Arizona’s first National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. With primary locations at the University of Arizona in Tucson and the Virginia Piper Cancer Center in Scottsdale, the Center has more than a dozen research and education offices distributed throughout the state. The Center’s mission is to prevent and cure cancer through patient care, research and education. For more information, go to www.azcc.arizona.edu.
