Cecilia Rosales, MD

U.S. President George W. Bush appointed Cecilia Rosales, MD, MS, associate professor in the Community, Environmental and Policy division at The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health to the United States Section of the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission.

Dr. Rosales, who joined the College last fall, will be offering courses that probe public health policy issues on the U.S.-Mexico border. Prior to joining the College, she was chief of the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Office of Border Health, where she earned a reputation for possessing an in-depth familiarity with border health issues.

"It is an exceptional honor to have Dr. Rosales appointed to this position. We recruited her to our college to strengthen our U.S.-Mexico border health programs. This appointment demonstrates her national leadership in this critical area of public health," stated G. Marie Swanson, PhD, MPH, dean at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health. "The success of the Office of Border Health is a prime example of her talent for bringing diverse groups of people together to build consensus, shared vision, and understanding of public health issues."

The trauma center in Nogales, Mexico, is a testament to a collaboration she established among the Hospital General de Nogales, Secretaría de Salud de Sonora, Holy Cross Hospital, the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health, TMC, UMC, and the Arizona-Mexico Commission/Comisión Sonora-Arizona.

Dr. Rosales has been active in numerous programs, including the "Healthy Gente/Healthy Border 2010 Initiative," which articulates a health-promotion and disease-prevention agenda for U.S.-Mexico border communities.

Dr. Rosales earned her medical degree in 1987 from the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juarez and an MS in epidemiology in 2000 from the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health.

The United States-Mexico Border Health Commission (USMBHC or Commission) was created as a binational health commission in July 2000 to provide international leadership to optimize health and quality of life along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Commission is comprised of the federal secretaries of health, the chief health officers of the 10 border states and prominent community health professionals from both nations.
