Beginning this summer, people with cancer, infertility, autoimmune illness and other life-threatening or chronic conditions will be able to learn techniques for coping and healing through a new Mind-Body Medicine Skills Group Program offered at The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson. Scientific research demonstrates that these groups enhance patients' quality of life, decrease depression and anxiety and, in some cases, improve the health condition itself.

The comprehensive 12-week program will teach proven ways to decrease stress through educational discussions, experiential techniques and a facilitator-run support group. The program will address scientific evidence for mind-body medicine, emotional awareness, belief systems about illness, spiritual connection and other areas related to optimal health. Participants will learn several stress-reducing strategies, from relaxation and imagery techniques to gentle yoga exercises. Through group support, they will find renewed purpose and a safe setting for transforming their lives. ,

The program director, Mark Gilbert, MD, is assistant professor with the UA College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and director of consultation-liaison psychiatry at University Medical Center. Prior to joining the UA, Dr. Gilbert was director of Mind-Body Medicine Canada. He has nearly 30 years of clinical expertise in the field of mind-body medicine and group therapy interventions.
