The University of
Arizona received the 2006 Copper Square DREAMR (Downtown Revitalization
Effort Awards of Merit and Recognition)
Organization Award for the expansion its College of Medicine in downtown Phoenix. The award is
presented by the Downtown Phoenix Partnership, a non-profit organization made up
of property owners, businesses, government and non-profit organizations, and
recognizes an organization that has “gone above and beyond” to take Copper Square revitalization to
new heights.
The new campus of the UA College of Medicine –
Phoenix is
located at the Phoenix Biomedical Campus at Copper Square at Seventh Street and Van
Buren. It is expected to open in July 2006 and start the first class of 24
first-year students in 2007. The campus eventually is planned to
accommodate 150 students per year.
Currently, the historic Phoenix Union High
School buildings are undergoing extensive renovation
to prepare for the new use. The three buildings, which were constructed
about 1913, will house the administrative offices, classrooms and telemedicine
facilities needed for the first 24 students. Eventually, an additional
building will be constructed to allow the program to grow to its anticipated
class size of 150 students per year; nearly doubling the number of allopathic
physicians graduating in the state each year.
The
expansion of the UA College of Medicine in Phoenix, in collaboration with Arizona State University and the Translational Genomics
Research Institute (TGen), will be a catalyst for
increased research partnerships. The College of Medicine’s expansion also will improve the
capacity to secure research funding. The University of Arizona College of
Medicine currently is ranked third nationally as a National Institutes of Health
(NIH) grant recipient among medical schools of comparable size, and
55th nationally among all medical schools. The College of Medicine’s ability to secure research
funding will grow as its faculty and research capacity expands.
Not only
will the capacity to compete for research funding grow, but the expansion has
significant economic impact to the region. A recent economic impact study
conducted by Tripp Umbach indicates that the new campus may result in the
creation of between 14,000 to 24,000 new jobs and have an overall economic
impact of between $1.1 and $2.1 billion by 2025.
