University Medical Center (UMC) is among the nation’s best hospitals in 10 areas of specialty medical care, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 16
th annual guide to “America’s Best Hospitals.”

Only three other Arizona hospitals, all in the Phoenix area, are included in the 2005 “Best Hospitals” list. One ranked in two medical specialties; the other two ranked in one medical specialty each.

The 2005 hospital guide appears in the July 18 edition of U.S. News, which is on newsstands July 11, and on the magazine’s Web site, http://www.usnews.com/usnews/health/best-hospitals/tophosp.htm.
In it, UMC is ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the United States in the following medical specialties:

·Cancer (ranked 21st in the nation)

·Geriatrics (21st)

·Heart and Heart Surgery (22nd)

·Respiratory Disorders (25th)

·Neurology and Neurosurgery (33rd)

·Gynecology (35th)

·Orthopaedics (35th)

·Ear, Nose and Throat (42nd)

·Kidney Disease (43rd)

·Urology (46th)

The standards for ranking in “Best Hospitals” are rigorous, according to U.S. News. Of the 6,007 medical centers in the United States (military and veterans hospitals are not included) only 176 were ranked in even one of the 17 medical specialties measured by the magazine.

The “Best Hospitals” methodology was devised in 1993 by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. The methodology factors in mortality statistics, hospital volume, nursing proficiency, availability of key technologies, reputation and other measures adjusted for each specialty.

“It is the people at UMC who bring this recognition to the hospital,” says UMC President and CEO Greg Pivirotto.  “Our physicians, scientists, nurses and staff believe in doing their utmost to better the lives of people living in the Southwest.”
