One of “America’s Top Physicians” has been appointed to
The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix as the associate dean for
academics. Stuart Flynn,
MD, a noted Yale University of Medicine professor, will join the
campus in June.
Dr. Flynn received Yale’s Teacher of the Year Award in
2004 and “America’s Top Physician’s Award” from
the Consumers’ Research Council of America in 2003, 2004 and 2005. He is
currently a professor of pathology and surgery as well as director of the
residency program and co-director of medical studies at Yale. He received
his medical degree from The University of Michigan and was a postdoctoral fellow
at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Flynn’s preliminary focus at the UA College of
Medicine - Phoenix will be to position the new
four-year Phoenix program for accreditation in
preparation for the first class planned for July 2007. He will guide a
committee comprised of representatives from the UA and Arizona State University to develop the basic structure
for the curriculum. Faculty members currently are being recruited to
finalize the detailed plans for the curriculum.
“Students only experience medical school one time.
We owe it to them to provide an ultimate, state-of-the-art medical education
experience,” Dr. Flynn explained.
Keith Joiner, MD, dean of the UA College of Medicine
said, “We are excited to have the benefit of Dr. Flynn’s medical education and
research experience at the new campus of the College of Medicine. It is indicative of the
profound potential of this campus that we are able to attract an associate dean
of academics of this caliber.”
City of Phoenix Mayor Phil
Gordon added, “It is a tremendous achievement to recruit such an
impressive physician and administrator to help create a world-class academic
health center in Phoenix.”
The new campus, located at Seventh Street and Van Buren, is
expected to open in July 2006 (grand opening celebration to be held Oct. 10,
2006) and the inaugural class of 24 first-year students will begin in July
2007. Ultimately, the campus is expected to graduate as many as 150
physicians per year.
