Phoenix campus expansion update

Facility
Construction of the new home of the UA College of Medicine - Phoenix is on target for the July 2006 grand opening. The floors in Building 1 have been poured and the structural steal has been put in place. The braces are off the building as the structural integrity has been restored.

The basement walls for the addition to Building 2 (the "core") are complete and the underground plumbing will be finished this week.  The mediated classroom area is structurally complete up to the second floor.

In Building 3 the interior wall studs are 98% complete on the first level and more than half complete on the second level.  The electrical rough in and duct work is being installed this week.  Exterior scaffolding is under construction in preparation for stucco repair and paint.

Faculty
The recruitment of basic science faculty is also progressing quickly.  Ads have been placed in national publications and more than 1,000 letters have been sent to attract potential faculty members.  A committee comprised of representatives from several stakeholder groups (UA, ASU, TGen, etc.) will be responsible for the selection of the faculty.  There are currently 204 completed applications that will be reviewed by the search committee this week.  It is anticipated that interviews will commence in Dec.

Funding
The plan submitted by ABOR in response to SB1517, which appropriated $7 million to UA and ASU for the development of the new four-year program, was presented to the JLBC (Joint Legislative Budget Committee) and favorably reviewed at the Sept. 28 meeting.  To view a copy of the report go to: http://www.abor.asu.edu/ABORTest/msdrafts/Preliminary 9-1-05 FINAL ABOR SB 1517 Response.pdf

The City of Phoenix Education Bond Subcommittee recommended to the Executive Bond Committee a $2.7 million bond allocation from the Phoenix Bond Package for the renovation of the historic auditorium on the new campus and initial planning of the UA College of Pharmacy to expand to Phoenix.

City of Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon announced the allocation of $25 million in New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC) to be applied toward the renovation costs of the historic buildings housing the new program.  He has also included an additional $90 million to the City of Phoenix NMTC 2006 application.  These additional tax credits would be used to expand the College of Medicine - Phoenix program from 24 students per class starting in July 2007 to 150 students by 2015.
