The committee has submitted its report to Raymond
Woosley, MD, vice president for health sciences, and has recommended three
candidates for further consideration:
(1)
Dr. Woosley has invited each of these candidates to
return to campus for meetings with faculty, students and administrators. During their visits they will have an
opportunity to participate in an open meeting with the students and a similar
meeting with the faculty and staff of the

Everyone is encouraged to attend the open meetings
with the candidates and to provide Dr. Woosley with their personal
recommendations and evaluations of the candidates.
In mid September, when the
visits have concluded and comments have been received, President Likins,
Provost Davis and Dr. Woosley will meet to begin the final phase of the search
process.

2. UA
RECEIVES APPROVAL TO TRAIN NEUROSURGEONS
The Department of Surgery in
the University of Arizona College of Medicine has established a newly
accredited residency training program in neurosurgery. A residency review committee from the
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved a
Residency Program in Neurological Surgery, effective June 27. The six-year
program will participate in the National Residency Matching Program and is
slated to accept its first student
Currently there are four other ACGME-accredited residency programs in the UA
Department of Surgery: General Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery and
Cardiothoracic Surgery. Including the new neurosurgery program, the UA College
of Medicine sponsors 22 ACGME-accredited residency programs.
The ACGME awards accreditation for the nation's residency programs, in which
doctors spend years of intense preparation in a specialty.

9. MIGRANT HEALTH PROGRAM
WINS AWARD
The Migrant Health Education
Program (MHEP) received the Project of the Year Award from the Arizona Rural
Health Association at their recent conference, “Preserving Arizona's Rural
Health Safety Net.”
The MHEP program is
coordinated by pre-medical students and provides monthly, free health education
and physicals to pre-school children of farm workers in
The program utilizes
students, volunteer teachers, interpreters, doctors and nurses in providing the
free health clinics.
The community outreach
program was started by a small group of ASU pre-medical students who are
members of F.A.C.E.S. - Fostering and Achieving Cultural Equity and Sensitivity
in Health Professions organization.
F.A.C.E.S. is a statewide group whose ASU chapter is sponsored by the
Office of Minority Affairs at the AHSC.
