1.  COLLEGE OF MEDICINE DEAN'S SEARCH UPDATE

The committee has submitted its report to Raymond Woosley, MD, vice president for health sciences, and has recommended three candidates for further consideration:  (1) Jose Jalife, MD, professor and chairman, Department of Pharmacology, professor of pediatrics and medicine and director of the Institute for Cardiovascular Research, SUNY Upstate Medical University (Syracuse); (2) Keith A. Joiner, MD, professor of medicine, cell biology and epidemiology, chief, Section of Infectious Diseases, associate chairman, Department of Internal Medicine, and director, Investigative Medicine Program, Yale University School of Medicine; and (3) Kenneth J. Ryan, MD, professor of pathology and of microbiology and immunology, dean for academic affairs, interim dean of the College of Medicine, University of Arizona.

Dr. Woosley has invited each of these candidates to return to campus for meetings with faculty, students and administrators.  During their visits they will have an opportunity to participate in an open meeting with the students and a similar meeting with the faculty and staff of the College of Medicine.   Students, staff and faculty from the other colleges are welcome to attend.  Individual announcements will be sent out for the times and locations of the open meetings.

The dates for the candidates' visits are: Monday, Aug. 18, Keith A. Joiner, M.D.; Friday, Aug. 22, Jose Jalife, M.D.; and Wednesday, Sept. 3, Kenneth J. Ryan, M.D.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the open meetings with the candidates and to provide Dr. Woosley with their personal recommendations and evaluations of the candidates.

In mid September, when the visits have concluded and comments have been received, President Likins, Provost Davis and Dr. Woosley will meet to begin the final phase of the search process.

2.  UA RECEIVES APPROVAL TO TRAIN NEUROSURGEONS

The Department of Surgery in the University of Arizona College of Medicine has established a newly accredited residency training program in neurosurgery.  A residency review committee from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved a Residency Program in Neurological Surgery, effective June 27. The six-year program will participate in the National Residency Matching Program and is slated to accept its first student July 1, 2004. The program will continue to accept one student per year.
Currently there are four other ACGME-accredited residency programs in the UA Department of Surgery: General Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Including the new neurosurgery program, the UA College of Medicine sponsors 22 ACGME-accredited residency programs.
The ACGME awards accreditation for the nation's residency programs, in which doctors spend years of intense preparation in a specialty.

The Migrant Health Education Program (MHEP) received the Project of the Year Award from the Arizona Rural Health Association at their recent conference, “Preserving Arizona's Rural Health Safety Net.”

The MHEP program is coordinated by pre-medical students and provides monthly, free health education and physicals to pre-school children of farm workers in Maricopa County.  In addition, the students and physician volunteers provide mammograms and clinical breast exams on site to mothers and grandmothers.

The program utilizes students, volunteer teachers, interpreters, doctors and nurses in providing the free health clinics.

The community outreach program was started by a small group of ASU pre-medical students who are members of F.A.C.E.S. - Fostering and Achieving Cultural Equity and Sensitivity in Health Professions organization.  F.A.C.E.S. is a statewide group whose ASU chapter is sponsored by the Office of Minority Affairs at the AHSC.   The clinics are becoming official Caring for Underserved Populations (CUP) sites, a program that provides medical students at the Arizona Health Science Center, Phoenix, an opportunity to volunteer at the clinics and receive hour-for-hour clinical credit.
