1. FREE
HEALTH SCREENING, JAN. 15
To start off everyone's new year on a positive health note, the State Wellness
Office will be sponsoring a mini-health screening on Wed., Jan. 15, 8-9 a.m. The screening will be held in the conference
room of the AHSC
The screening will include
blood pressure and percent of body fat check; height/weight/frame size
assessment; cholesterol and blood sugar check (blood draw); and a personal
& confidential report mailed to your home.
The screening is on a
first-come, first-served basis, and takes between five and 15 minutes. An eight-hour fasting period before the
screening is required.
Med 40 and over can get a
prostate cancer (PSA) screening exam by blood draw. Women age 40 and over and postmenopausal
(means you have completed “natural menopause” or you have had both ovaries
surgically removed) women under age 40 are eligible for a free osteoporosis
screening. Screening takes as little as
10 minutes and there is no appointment necessary. People who do not meet these qualifications
can also have an osteoporosis screening for a co-pay of $30.00.

2. HISPANIC
MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM SET FOR JAN. 4
Mental
health disparities occur for the Hispanic population, according to the Office of the U.S. Surgeon
General. Issues in Hispanic mental
health care are the focus of Hispanic
Mental Health Care Symposium: Mental Health Disparities in the Hispanic
Population,
Symposium
goals include enhancing awareness of the unique Hispanic population; providing
updated information on issues specific to Hispanic mental health disparities;
and discussing the need for improved mental health care science and
services. Presented by The Institute for
Mental Health Research, the symposium is co-sponsored by the Arizona Psychological
Association (AzPA) and the University of Arizona College of Medicine, with
support by a grant from Pfizer.
Hundreds
of policy-makers, physicians (including
psychiatrists and other specialists), nurses, other health care providers and
mental health care advocates are expected to attend. Participants will discuss disparities in Hispanic mental health care, identify the unique
epidemiology and biology of this population, review diagnostic issues related
to Hispanic patients, and recognize specific access-to-care issues for this
population.
