1.  ARIZONA HISPANIC CENTER OF EXCELLENCE RECEIVES $500,000 GRANT

 

The Arizona Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE) at the University of Arizona College of Medicine was awarded $500,000 from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).  The grant enables the center to continue its efforts in supporting Hispanic faculty and student recruitment, development and retention.

Based within the University of Arizona College of Medicine, the HCOE brings together the parts of the College of Public Health, the Mexican American Studies and Research Center, the Graduate College, and the Office of Minority Affairs to work with external partners to connect people and programs that promote Hispanic health issues and Hispanic physician development.

2.  DR. JACQUELINE CHADWICK HONORED WITH HEALTH CARE HERO AWARD

 

Jacqueline Chadwick, MD, associate vice president and vice dean, AHSC Phoenix Campus, was presented with The Business Journal's Health Care Hero Manager Award at a recent awards breakfast at the Ritz-Carlton in Phoenix. 

Dr. Chadwick was among several awardees who were honored with Health Care Hero awards.  The event pays tribute to those in the health care community who truly are making a difference in the lives around them, whether patients they treat, co-workers they support or the community in which they live.

3.  ABOR AND AzHHA ANNOUNCE COLLABORATIVE ENDEAVOR TO ADDRESS NURSING SHORTAGE

 

The Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) and Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association (AzHHA) are teaming up to confront the state's critical lack of capacity in university and community college nursing education programs.  On Sept. 1, at the request of ABOR, health care executive Fran Roberts, RN, PhD, AzHHA's vice president of Professional Services, began a loaned executive appointment with ABOR.  During her 10-month tenure, Dr. Roberts will help design and implement plans aimed at addressing the shortage of nurses.

Her primary objective will be to work with the university deans of nursing colleges and the leaders of the community to double enrollments to the universities' three nursing programs and 16 community colleges by 2007.

Dr. Roberts will serve in the loaned executive position until June 30, 2004.

4. FLU SHOTS AVAILABLE OCTOBER 22

 

The State Wellness Office will provide flu shots on a walk-in basis on October 22 from 8:30-9 a.m. at the AHSC Phoenix Campus, 4001 North Third St., Suite 415 in Classroom C.  The shots are free to all state employees or anyone with the following insurance carriers:  Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (must be Arizona), Pacificare/Secure Horizon, or Medicare B.  Family members are welcome to get a flu shot.  The shots for family members are $20 if they do not meet the above criteria.

You should NOT get a flu shot if:  (1) You have ever had a serious allergic reaction to eggs or a previous flu shot; (2) you have a fever, acute respiratory or other infection or illness; (3) you are pregnant in the first trimester; and (4) you have a history of Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

5. CONFERENCE ON WOMEN'S HEALTH FEATURES TOPICS THAT RESPOND TO THE 2000 REPORT, 'THE STATUS OF WOMEN IN ARIZONA'; HIGHLIGHTS MAJOR AREAS OF CONCERN FOR ARIZONA WOMEN

 

The Arizona Women's Conference presents, "Chart Your Own Course" on September 14 and 15, 2003, at the Radisson Hotel City Center in Tucson.  The Arizona Women's Conference 2003 is framed around four major areas of concern for Arizona Women: Health and Well-Being, Education, Employment and Earnings, and Political Participation. This framework was developed in response to information provided in the 2000 report, “The Status of Women in Arizona” produced by the Institute for Women's Policy Research in collaboration with the Southwest Institute for Research on Women at the University of Arizona and the Women's Foundation of Southern Arizona.

On Sunday, September 14, there will be a reception where the guest speaker will be Mrs. Columba Bush, First Lady for the state of Florida.  On Monday, September 15, there will be a luncheon where the keynote speaker will be Governor Janet Napolitano.

6. COPH STUDENT SELECTED TO PRESENT AT NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH CONFERENCE

 

Community Health & Practice student, Rebecca White, has been selected to present at the Annual American Public Health Conference in San Francisco this November.  Ms. White has two papers selected for presentation:  Poster, “Diverting Offenders with Mental Illness from Jails to Community-based Treatment” and oral presentation, “Community Health Data Systems in Rural and Urban Settings.”  Proposals to present at the national conference are received from all across the nation from public health practitioners, administrators and experts, and only a select number are accepted.

8. NEW PUBLIC HEALTH SEMINAR SERIES BEGINS SEPT. 16

 

The Mel & Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health kicks off its fall 2003 Engaging Our Communities Public Health Seminar Series with its first lecture, “Lessons Learned and Future Challenges for Bioterrorism and Public Health Emergency Preparedness” presented by Marilyn Atha, B-T coordinator Pima County, Ted Tong, professor and associate dean, College of Pharmacy, Les Caid, deputy chief Tucson Fire and Tucson MMRS on Sept. 16 from  12-1 p.m. in the videoconference room at the AHSC Phoenix Campus, 4001 N. Third St., Suite 415. 

All lectures are presented live in Tucson and videoconferenced to the AHSC Phoenix Campus and to Northern Arizona University.
