Med-Start begins program in Maricopa County

The new summer pilot program called Maricopa Med-Start (M²) begins on June 20, 2004 and will offer 12 students from Maricopa County an opportunity to learn first-hand what it takes to become a health care professional. The intensive five-week program is modeled after the successful 35 year-old Med-Start Program at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson.

Starting a Med-Start program in Maricopa County is definitely needed. “Each year close to 250 applications are received for the Tucson program; with almost 50 percent of those applications coming from Maricopa County. Yet, since the capacity in Tucson is 60 participants, many qualified Maricopa County students have to be turned away,” said Jonathan Robles, director, Phoenix Office of Minority Affairs, director, Hispanic Center of Excellence and past Med-Start participant.

Maricopa Med-Start is designed for Maricopa County high school students to explore health and biomedical research careers while learning the realities of college academics and college life. “The students who participate in Maricopa Med-Start have interest, talent and ambition, but need our help to reach their goals,” said Robles.

The program provides academic enrichment and health career exploration in college level English; clinical skills training; special lectures on health careers, tours of health care and research facilities; preparation for college seminars; leadership sessions; and dormitory life experience. The students will earn six units of college credit.

Since its beginning at the UA Health Sciences campus in 1968, over 2,000 students have completed Med-Start. Eighty percent of these students have continued on in pursuit of college degrees and rewarding careers in health care, among others.

Our guest presenter, Maria Patti, who directed the Readers’ Circle, discussed “Bringing Humor into the Classroom.”
