Phoenix Campus FCM Dept. awarded HRSA grant

The University of Arizona, Phoenix Campus, Family and Community Medicine Department has been awarded a HRSA grant in Physician Faculty Development in Primary Care for 2004-2007.

Key components of the faculty development program this cycle will include: distance learning, public health emergency preparedness and cultural competence.

The Phoenix Campus FCM department provided the leadership with a similar grant to assist in faculty development from 2001-2004. During that time there were 46 fellows who graduated from the combined Phoenix-based seminar series and the rural teleconferenced faculty development series.

Phoenix faculty participating in the Fellowship programs for 2004-2007 include: Michele Lundy, M.D., principal investigator and director of the Phoenix-based seminar series; Doug Campos-Outcalt, M.D., public health emergency preparedness; Jeff Wolfrey, M.D., preparing faculty for the ACGME outcomes-based competencies and Marya Cota, Ph.D., cultural competency.

Dr. Monte DuVal, Dr. Eric Reiman and Dr. Bruce Bethancourt honored with Health Care Heroes Awards

Merlin “ Monte” DuVal, M.D., founding dean, UA College of Medicine and UAHS Greater-Phoenix Leadership Board member, was presented with The Business Journal’s Health Care Hero Lifetime Achievement Award at a recent awards breakfast at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix.

In addition, Eric Reiman, M.D., professor and associate head, UA Dept. of Psychiatry, was awarded the Health Care Hero Researcher/Scientist Award and Bruce Bethancourt, Jr., M.D., clinical lecturer, UA College of Medicine was presented with the Health Care Hero Physician Award.

The event pays tribute to those in the health care community who truly are making a difference in the lives around them, whether patients they treat, co-workers they support or the community in which they live.

Four Phoenix Campus medical students make AOA honor society

Congratulations to seniors Steve Hoye, Christian Kirman, Lisa Pepka and Dustin Rayhorn for their acceptance to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) National Honor Medical Society. The students were recognized for their outstanding academic performance plus their exceptional personal qualities of integrity, dedication and compassion.

Public Health Seminar Series starts Sept. 7

The Mel & Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health begins its fall 2004 Engaging Our Communities Public Health Seminar Series with its first lecture, “Bringing Health Policy Issues Front and Center in the Community: Expanding the Role of Community Health Coalitions” presented by Jill De Zapien, associate dean for Community Programs and Joel Meister, Ph.D., associate professor of Public Health, Director Public Health Policy and Management Concentration, MEZACOPH. The lecture will be held on Sept. 7 from 12-1 p.m. in the videoconference room at the AHSC Phoenix Campus, 4001 N. Third St., Suite 415.

All lectures are presented live in Tucson and videoconferenced to the AHSC Phoenix Campus and to Northern Arizona University. Presentations may also be viewed live, via the streaming video server at: http://video.biocom.arizona.edu/video/videolibrary/CPH/PHGR/defautl.htm

Phoenix Campus faculty meeting, Sept. 20

The Phoenix Campus fall faculty meeting will be held at the Phoenix Airport Marriott, 1101 N. 44th St., Monday, Sept. 20. Registration and no-host bar is from 5 - 5:30 p.m. The dinner and meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The agenda will include: admissions report from Christopher A. Leadem, Ph.D., senior associate dean for Admissions & Student Affairs; student affairs report from Christopher A. Leadem, Ph.D. and J. AzMEC offers End-of-Life Care education program

The Arizona Medical Education Consortium (AzMEC) is offering a core curriculum program on “Educating Physicians for End-of Life Care” for all AzMEC residency programs (residents and faculty) on Friday, October 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Flinn Foundation, 1802 North Central Avenue in Phoenix.

The program’s topics include: holistic care, medical futility, communication, advance care planning, legal and ethical issues, and pain and symptom management. All primary care residency programs will require this course during residency training.

AHSC Phoenix Campus welcomes new employees

Pattie DeSha recently accepted the position of administrative assistant for the Family and Community Medicine Dept., COM Phoenix Campus. In her support role, she will be working with Doug Campos-Outcalt, M.D. and the Clerkship Program, as well as with Michele Lundy, M.D. and the Faculty Development Fellowship Program.

Pattie graduated from Arkansas State University with an Associate of Arts/Business degree in 1991. Prior to that, she was a detective with the Clayton County Police Department in Georgia. Pattie and her family relocated to Phoenix following her husband’s retirement.

Monica Sanchez is the new administrative assistant for the office of Academic Access and Achievement. She previously provided administrative support for behavioral health agencies in the metropolitan area. Monica is a 2001 graduate of Sunnyside High School in Tucson.

Dr. Linda Larson Carr presents to pharmacy preceptors at University of South Carolina

Dr. Linda Larson Carr, academic specialist for the AHSC Phoenix Campus, presented a three-hour workshop on August 5 to 109 pharmacy preceptors at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Dr. Carr’s interactive presentation entitled “Evolving the Art of Clinical Teaching” examined the context of clinical education, specifically looking at the transition from novice to expert, the process of learning, and how to enhance questioning and giving feedback. During the second half, she presented a model of clinical teaching that uses a 7-step approach to structure effective, short precepting encounters and provided opportunities for small groups to apply the guidelines to clinical cases. Dr. Carr’s presentation was part of a one-day conference (Mini-Boot Camp for the Busy Preceptor”) sponsored by the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy.
