Update on the progress of the Phoenix Program of the University of Arizona College of Medicine

Programming for renovation of the Phoenix Union High School buildings is basically complete and plans are underway to begin necessary internal demolition in early February.  Timing is of utmost importance to prepare the buildings for a start date of July 2006.  We are anticipating a starting class size of 24 at that time.

Serious discussion is underway for developing a separate curricular track for the Phoenix Program.  This would allow for added objectives to those in existence in Tucson .  Separate course lengths, types of teaching and evaluation processes would then be possible instead of the current requirement for "comparability" of experiences and "equivalency" of course length and evaluation under which we operate with exactly the same curriculum (third and fourth year).

More planning and details to come; stay tuned.

" Call for Bright Ideas - Deadline April 1, 2005

Bright Ideas are creative techniques used to enhance learning and teaching in clinical education.  A poster session will showcase these ideas during the 4th Annual Innovations in Medical Education event on Thursday evening, April 28th, at the Phoenix Airport Marriott.

The Bright Ideas Network's goal is to support the development of a scholarship in learning and teaching that:  1) recognizes and rewards teaching strategies as afforded to other forms of scholarship; 2) enhances the practice and profession of teaching; and 3) fosters significant, long-lasting learning for all students.

Bright Ideas submission categories include curriculum development, instructional development, organizational development, faculty development, instructional technology and other.

A panel of judges will select up to three entries that best represent the scholarship of learning and teaching.  Posters will be judged according to originality, scope and impact, transferability and effectiveness.
