Phoenix campus expansion update - UA chosen as DREAMR Award recipient

Progress toward the expansion of the UA College of Medicine to a four-year program in Phoenix is continuing at a rapid pace.  As a result of these efforts, the University of Arizona was awarded the 2006 Copper Square DREAMR (Downtown Revitalization Effort Awards of Merit and Recognition) Organization Award.  The award is presented by the Downtown Phoenix Partnership, a non-profit organization made up of property owners, businesses, government and non-profit organizations.  It recognizes an organization that has "gone above and beyond" to take Copper Square revitalization to new heights.

Facility renovation (Historic Buildings)
Renovation of the historic buildings for the new program of the UA College of Medicine - Phoenix is more than 55 percent complete and ahead of schedule.  Work is expected to be finalized in mid-summer 2006.

Construction of the ABC 1 building (Arizona Biomedical Collaborative) has begun with excavation of the building's basement.  This project is an example of the unique collaboration between the UA and ASU.  It will house the ASU Biomedical Informatics Department as well as wet lab space for the UA.

Faculty and administration
The faculty search committee, which includes representatives from the UA College of Medicine, ASU, TGen and BNI, has identified 32 candidates from over 375 applications received for basic science faculty appointments for the new Phoenix program.  The first two groups of candidates visited Phoenix this month and the remaining candidates will be invited to visit throughout Jan. and Feb.

The candidates are all participating in a three-day process that includes a reception at the Mayor's office, a symposium presentation related to the candidate's area of research interest (held at TGen), personal interviews and a meeting to discuss teaching and curriculum.

Interviews for the associate dean for academics are also currently in progress.  The candidate selected for this key position will provide leadership in the development of the new academic program in Phoenix.

An executive search firm has been engaged to conduct a national search for the vice dean for the Phoenix program.  The search committee for this position will be formed by early Feb. and will include representation from the Phoenix community.

Community Mini Med School registration for spring session in progress

Registration for the spring session of Mini Med School is in progress.  Mini Medical School is a vital tool to promote the College of Medicine’s expansion to a four year program in Phoenix, as well as to educate the public about the exciting programs and research happening at The University of Arizona.  This is an opportunity to learn about medicine, current health issues and the College of Medicine in a way that is fun and understandable.

The spring session begins Mar. 7 and continues each Tuesday evening through Mar. 28, 2006.  Leading faculty members from the UA College of Medicine will present interactive lectures on subjects related to curriculum experienced by real medical school students.

Spring sessions include:  Ethics in Medicine, taught by Dr. David Beyda; Inside the Mind of a Child, taught by Dr. Dan Kessler; Venomous Creatures, taught by Dr. Leslie Boyer from the UA Poison Center; and Skin Cancer in Arizona...Surviving the Sun., presented by the UA Arizona Cancer Center.
