Phoenix Campus expansion update

Faculty and administration recruitment
Stuart Flynn, MD, has been selected as the associate dean for academics for the College of Medicine - Phoenix program.  Dr. Flynn currently is the director and coordinator of Pre-Clinical Modules, director of Surgical Pathology, director of the Pathology Residency Training Program and professor of Pathology and Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine.  He attended The University of Michigan,where he received his medical degree, and has gone on to receive  America's Top Physician's Award three times (Consumers' Research Council of America). In addition to his extensive teaching experience and award-winning clinical skills, Dr. Flynn is also an accomplished researcher and NIH grant recipient.

A national search firm, Korn Ferry, has been secured to recruit the vice dean for the Phoenix program.   Representatives from the firm have met with the vice dean search committee to develop the job description for this position.  On April 21 they will present initial candidates to the search committee and airport interviews will take place on May 18 and 19.  Ads have been placed in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Academic Physician and Scientist as well as on-line on the Chronicle of Higher Education and Academic Keys web pages. 

ACMER endorses working group for ABC 2

At a meeting April 3, the Arizona Commission on Medical Education and Research (ACMER) endorsed the formation of a working group to move forward with planning for the Arizona Biomedical Collaborative (ABC) Building 2.  The need for additional research space on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus in addition to ABC 1 has been clearly identified and the commission supported the need to start planning for the additional lab space.   The Commission also discussed the need for an ongoing strategic planning process for the full scope of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus.

Facility renovation (historic buildings)
Renovation of the historic buildings for the new program of the UA College of Medicine - Phoenix (in collaboration with ASU) is nearly 85 percent complete.

Grand Opening Event for the College of Medicine - Phoenix to be held Oct. 10, 2006 - save the date

The grand opening celebration for The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix, in collaboration with Arizona State University, is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006 at 12:30 p.m. 

Please mark your calendars and plan to join us!  We will celebrate the completion of the renovation of the historic Phoenix Union High School buildings and mark the beginning of their new purpose as the home for the new, four-year program of the College of Medicine - Phoenix.

Register now - 'Breast Cancer Prevention,' presented by Dave Alberts, MD - to be held May 4

Registration for the Spring 2006 Phoenix Community Luncheon, "Breast Cancer Prevention," presented by Dave Alberts, MD, is in progress.  The luncheon will be held at The University Club (39 E. Monte Vista) from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 4.  All are welcome but capacity is limited - so register soon!

The presenter, Dave Alberts, MD, is director of the Arizona Cancer Center and regents professor of Medicine, Pharmacology, Nutritional Sciences and Public Health at The University of Arizona College of Medicine.  He is a pioneer of translational cancer-prevention research, advancing cancer prevention from the earliest preclinical and clinical stages of drug development to definitive randomized controlled trials.

Academic Excellence Day to be held May 3

The Arizona Medical Education Consortium (AzMEC) will present the 10th Annual Academic Excellence Day on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at the Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Conference Center. The event is presented in partnership with Banner Samaritan Medical Center, Phoenix Baptist Hospital, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Maricopa Integrated Health System, Mayo Clinic Arizona, Scottsdale Healthcare and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.

The invited guest speaker is Malcolm Cox, MD, Chief, Office of Academic Affiliations at the Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, D.C.,  where he oversees all VA graduate medical education programs across the United States.  He is also the Carl W. Walter Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Harvard University.

This oral and poster presentation is an opportunity to focus attention on the magnitude and variety of clinical and bench research being done by residents, fellows, graduate students, clinical allied health staff and physician staff. For more information, contact Karen Archibald at (602) 631-6551.

Phoenix College of Medicine students named to Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society

Steven Nelson, UA College of Medicine - Phoenix student, recently was inducted into the Junior Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.

Alpha Omega Alpha is the only national medical honor society in the world.  Alpha Omega Alpha's aim is to promote scholarship and research in medical schools, to encourage a high standard of character and conduct among medical students and graduates and to recognize high attainment in medical science, practice and related fields.

Educating Physicians for End-of-Life Care session to be offered April 21

The next Arizona Medical Education Consortium-sponsored course in Educating Physicians for End-of-Life Care is offered to residents and faculty and will be presented at the Flinn Foundation on Friday, April 21, from 8:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Presenters are Gillian Hamilton, MD, Bernadette Arnecke, MD, Paul Stander, MD, and Carol McAninch-Pritz, director of spiritual care at Banner Samaritan.  This course is required by all primary care residency training programs and covers topics on pain management, legal and ethical issues, advance care planning, managing agitation and delirium, symptom management, palliative care and hospice and spirituality.  To register, please call Karen Archibald at (602) 631-6570.
